The stage is set for Mahakumbh 2025 to be held in the city of Prayagraj in January. Millions of devotees from all around India will participate in the world’s largest religious gathering organised after a gap of 12 years.

In an effort to make the event more grandeur than in previous years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated development projects worth Rs 5,500 crore. The projects are aimed at streamlining amenities for participants of Mahakumbh and giving a boost to the city’s infrastructure.

“Maha Kumbh is a living identity representing our legacy of the divine festival of our faith, spirituality and culture”, the prime minister said as he addressed people in Prayagraj last week.

Recognised by UNESCO as an ‘Intangible cultural heritage of humanity’, the Mahakumbh is being celebrated after a gap of 12 years at the confluence of the sacred rivers Ganga and Yamuna. According to religious legend, the invisible sacred river Saraswati also converges here. Hence the confluence is called ‘Triveni Sangam’.

PM Modi inaugurated several rail and road infrastructure projects, including 10 new Road Over Bridges (ROBs), flyovers, permanent ghats, and riverfront roads. These initiatives are designed to enhance seamless connectivity and accommodate the massive influx of devotees anticipated during the Mahakumbh.

In line with the central government’s ‘Swacch and Nirmal Ganga’ project, efforts have also been made to intercept, divert and treat sewage water that leads to the river. These initiatives will ensure that untreated water is not discharged into Ganga.

The prime minister has also launched significant temple corridor projects, including the Bharadwaj Ashram, Shringverpur Dham, Akshayvat, and Hanuman Mandir corridors. These developments are intended to improve access for pilgrims and boost spiritual tourism in the area.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is scheduled to take place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, from January 13 to February 26, 2025.
