Mumbai is under ‘red alert’ as the commercial capital of India witnessed incessant heavy rainfall over the past few days that left most low lying areas submerged in water. The alert by the IMD suggests that the city will experience more heavy rain on Friday following which the Mumbai Police has asked people to stay indoors, but schools and colleges have not declared holiday.

More rains and thunderstorms will likely throw life out of gear as Mumbai roads will be waterlogged, there will be traffic snarls and the lifeline of city ‘Mumbai local’ will be delayed or cancelled.

The Mumbai Police in a post on X said, “IMD has declared a Red alert for Mumbai… Requesting all Mumbaikars to stay indoors, until essential. Please stay safe.”

In its bulletin on Thursday, the weather department said “isolated heavy rainfall” will likely be over parts of Central Maharashtra, the Konkan region, and other areas of the state on July 26 and 27.

BMC schools open despite Mumbai police asking people to stay indoor

Citing the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Mumbai Police warned the people of heavy rain on Friday, but the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) late Thursday said that the weather and rainfall in the city are normal, and the educational institutes will function normal on July 26.

“The weather and rainfall in Mumbai are normal at present, allowing life in the metropolitan city to proceed smoothly. As a result, all schools and colleges in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) area will remain open on a regular basis tomorrow, Friday, 26th July 2024,” the BMC said in a post on X.

The municipal body also requested parents not to believe any other information or rumors regarding school and college holidays and to only rely on official information from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

On Thursday, a dozen flights were cancelled and around 10 were diverted to nearby areas after heavy rains in Mumbai.

Railway tracks were submerged under water, resulting in delays and cancellation of several local trains on Thursday.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde convened a high-level meeting with Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday to review the relief and rescue operations.

The Chief Minister informed that teams of NDRF, SDRF units, Army, Navy, police, fire brigade and doctors have been mobilised across the state to speed up the relief operations and to provide help.
