More than 150 flights are delayed and over 30 flights have been cancelled at the Delhi airport due to dense fog on Tuesday, 16 January.
Thick layer of fog in Delhi and its adjoining areas in the National Capital Region (NCR) significantly impacted visibility in most areas.
Landing and taking-off of flights in Delhi, one of the busiest airports in the country, were affected due to foggy weather.
Earlier in the day, Delhi airport said, “low visibility procedures are in progress” at the airport. “Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.”
“While landing and takeoffs continue at Delhi Airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may get affected,” it added.
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), at 7:00 am (IST) Palam Airport (VIDP) was reporting 100 m visibility which became 00 m at 7:30 am (IST).
30 trains to Delhi running late
The impact of fog in most parts of northern India has not been limited to air travel alone. Trains to Delhi were from various parts of the country were also running late due to cold wave and unfavourable weather conditions on Tuesday.
Howrah-New Delhi Duronto Express was running 6 hours 30 minutes late than its scheduled arrival in New Delhi Railway Station.
Also, Hyderabad-New Delhi Express, Ajmer-Katra Pooja Express were running six-and-a-half hours late.
Orange alert for Delhi
Delhi’s minimum temperature on Tuesday dropped to 3.3 degrees Celsius, this winter season’s lowest.
The minimum temperature of the national capital was four notches below the season’s average.
The IMD has issued orange alert for very dense fog. Also, dense to very dense fog conditions in the morning hours are likely to prevail on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Moreover, cold wave conditions will continue until tomorrow.
