Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewari-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu in Maharashtra – the longest bridge as well as the longest sea bridge in the country connecting south Mumbai with Nhava-Sheva in Navi Mumbai.

Atal Setu will provide faster connectivity to Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport and will also reduce the travel time from Mumbai to Pune, Goa and South India.

The 21.8-km long Mumbai Transharbour link (MTHL), popularly called Atal Setu, has been built at a total cost of more than Rs 17,840 crore.

In December 2016, PM Modi laid the foundation stone of the bridge. Marking the historic milestone in India’s infrastructure development, the name Atal Setu also honours the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Meanwhile, the PM on Friday also laid the foundation stone of an underground road tunnel connecting the Eastern Freeway in eastern Mumbai to Marine Drive in south Mumbai.

The 9.2 km tunnel will be built at a cost of more than Rs 8,700 crore.
