Delhi airport, on Monday, faced power failure, leading to chaos at one of the busiest international airports in India. The power failure at the T3 terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport in national capital lasted for about 15 minutes.

Passengers took to social media saying that the Delhi international airport was “chocked due to power failure! No counter, no DigiYatra, nothing worked for good 10-15 minutes. Now all well.”

One of the flyers shared a clip from the T3 of Delhi airport showing passengers congregated inside the premises, waiting for the restoration of electricity.

The power outage at the airport in Delhi caused severe inconvenience to passengers and airline staff, and also had a massive impact in boarding and check-in facilities.

A passenger flying with Air India complained that there was a server down for “half an hour at Terminal 3, Delhi Airport. The ground staff seems helpless and situations of passengers are becoming worst.”

Delhi airport too faces power cut

One of the users said, “Delhi is facing electricity shortages. Delhi airport also hit by electricity shortage.”

What did Delhi Airport say?

Meanwhile, GMR said the power went out for 2-3 minutes.

Reason for power outage at Delhi airport

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said, “Around 2 PM on Monday (June 17), Delhi Airport’s Main Receiving Sub-station (MRSS) detected a significant voltage spike at the grid, reportedly due to the tripping of a 765KV line. This voltage imbalance from the Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) Grid briefly impacted all IGI terminals, affecting baggage acceptance and e-gates. “

“To maintain essential services, we proactively switched all terminals to DG load. The power back-up system, installed by DIAL, was operationalised within a few minutes, and all back-up procedures were initiated to facilitate passengers at all touch points,” a DIAL spokesperson said.

“By 3:00 PM, the grid voltage had stabilised and was accepted at the MRSS breaker and all services were smoothly transitioned back from DG load to DTL grid load, and the DG supply was disconnected,” the DIAL spokesperson further said.

Were flights affected?

No international and domestic flights take-off and landing to and from the Delhi IGI airport were affected by the power outage, the airport said.

There are three terminals in the Delhi airport T1, T2, and T3.

T1 and T2 are used for domestic operations, while the T3 is for both international and domestic operations.

T1’s capacity is around 40 million, T2’s is about 15 million, while T3 has the maximum, with the capacity of nearly 45 million.
