Eight people died and many were injured on Friday when a private bus crashed through the railing of a bridge here and plunged into a drain a few feet below, police said.

The bus had over 45 passengers and it fell in Lasara drain at Jeewan Singhwala village, officials said. The accident occurred when the bus was enroute to Bathinda from Talwandi Sabo. Locals rushed to the spot immediately to help the passengers, they said.

Deputy Commissioner Bathinda, Showkat Ahmad Parray said ” 8 people have died unfortunately, including a 2-year-old girl – 5 of them were in Talwandi hospital, other three people lost their lives in the civil hospital, Bathinda. Out of eight people, 5 have been identified and three are yet to be identified. The bus was at high speed and the driver lost control… All the help that the govt can do will be extended to the families.”

The weather was inclement in the area, the officials said, while adding that exact cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.

Amneet Kondal, SSP Bathinda, says, “46 passengers were rescued. 8 deaths are confirmed as of now. The health conditions of others are normal…”
