The Supreme Court on Thursday heard a bunch of petitions over the NEET controversy that alleges malpractices in the conduction of the medical exams. A bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud made it clear during the hearing that any order on conducting the NEET-UG exams afresh should be taken on “concrete footing” that the sanctity of the previous exams was affected on a large scale.
The bench heard more than 40 pleas, including those filed by the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts NEET-UG, seeking the transfer of cases pending against it in various high courts regarding the alleged irregularities in the exam to the Supreme Court to avoid multiplicity of litigations.
More than 23.33 lakh students had taken the test on May 5 at 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including 14 overseas.
Meanwhile, the central government and the NTA have been staunchly opposed to the idea of a re-test, saying that such a practice would be “counterproductive” and “seriously jeopardise” lakhs of honest candidates.
The Central Bureau of Investigation, which is probing the case of the question paper leak, has made a couple of arrests from Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The arrested individuals have been accused of stealing and circulating the NEET-UG papers.
