A few bones of a human purported to be of Sheena Bora, which suddenly had gone missing from CBI’s storeroom in Mumbai, have been found in the agency’s malkhana (record room) in Delhi.
The development comes after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told a trial court of the whereabouts of the skeletal remains during a hearing on the Sheena Bora murder case on Wednesday.
Did Sheena Bora’s bones actually go missing?
The revelation came on a day when the trial court received an email and a hard copy from a person claiming to be the forensic expert Dr Zeba Khan’s brother, who alleged that Sheena’s bones had not gone missing but were in her possession. Khan had examined the skeleton and was deposing before the court as a witness.
Special CBI judge SP Naik Nimbalkar informed the court about the email which also alleged that Zeba had suddenly amassed wealth.
Forensic expert in Sheena Bora murder case ‘received crores to lie’ The email alleged that Zeba had “received crores to lie” about Sheena’s remains being missing and that she has recently purchased a house and a clinic in Dubai. It also claimed that Zeba and the accused could be behind the evidence suddenly vanishing.
The email was shown to the three defence lawyers, Ranjit Sangle, Manjula Rao and Shreyansh Mithare representing accused Indrani Mukerjea, Peter Mukerjea and Sanjeev Khanna, respectively. The judge said that the allegations were serious and needed to be investigated.
Meanwhile, the defence lawyers insisted that there should be action against the person who had sent the mail for misleading the court, to which the court replied that it was up to the CBI to do so. The accused’s lawyers also sought that the bones be produced in court, but the judge said the exercise would be futile as the CBI was not relying on it.
Bones believed to be Sheena Boara’s won’t be cited as proof
CBI special public prosecutor CJ Nandode went to malkhana following the hearing on Wednesday and returned to the court later in the day to say that the bones were lying in the record but the CBI will no longer want to rely on the evidence. He also said that the bones were not being relied on by the prosecution as they were not mentioned in the chargesheet.
Sheena Bora murder case
In a case filed by the CBI, it has been alleged that Sheena was murdered by her mother Indrani Mukerjea and her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna alongwith driver Shyamwar Rai in 2012. The agency claimed that on April 24, 2012, Indrani and Sanjeev abducted Sheena in a car, administered sedatives and later strangled her to death.
In its case, the agency further alleged that Sheena’s body was then shifted to Pen village in Raigad district where it was burnt. The skeletal remains were later recovered by Pen Police in 2012 which were sent to JJ Hospital for examination.
The alleged crime came to fore in August 2015. Driver Shyamwar Rai turned approver and deposed as a prosecution witness.
The case continues to remain unsolved.
