Ajay Taware, head of the forensic department of Sassoon General Hospital, who was among the two doctors arrested for allegedly forging the blood sample of the 17-year-old Pune Porsche crash case accused, is known for many controversies.

During the investigation with the Pune Crime Branch, Dr Taware has threatened to reveal more names involved in case where the minor boy, under the influence of alcohol, knocked down two people with his unregistered Porsche Taycan on May 19.

Soon after Taware’s arrest, a three-member committee was constituted by Maharashtra government’s Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) to probe “misconduct” by the two doctors of Sassoon General Hospital.

DMER director Dilip Mhaisekar highlighted that the directorate had already recommended the removal of Dr Taware as the superintendent of Sassoon hospital in the past.

Taware was removed from the post but was again appointed as medical superintendent on December 29, 2023, based on a recommendation from Ajit Pawar’s NCP MLA Sunil Tingre.

Interestingly, reports said Tingre had visited the Yerawada police station after the teen, accused in the Pune Porsche accident case, was arrested on 19 May. There were allegations that he went there to put pressure on the cops to go soft on the minor.

However, Tingre had claimed that he went to the police station to ensure that an investigation was being carried out without any pressure.

A report by Economic Times said, Ajit Pawar, deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, had allegedly made a call to the Pune Police commissioner to go “soft” on the teen accused.

Controversies surrounding Dr Ajay Taware

Kidney racket case: In 2022, Taware’s name surfaced in a kidney transplant racket case after which he was suspended.

As per reports, a widow, who hailed from Kolhapur, was lured to Pune and her kidney was transplanted into an unknown patient under false pretext. The woman filed a police complaint alleging that she was promised Rs 15 lakh in exchange for a kidney. A probe was carried out and Taware was suspended following the inquiry committee’s report.

Patient’s death due to rat bite: In a separate case, a patient at Sassoon Hospital died due to a rat bite, as per an initial probe. However, the post-mortem report showed severe spinal injuries as the cause of death. An inquiry was carried out which found Taware guilty, and action was recommended against him and three other employees.
