As Haryana assembly election results defied exit polls’ predictions, the Congress on Tuesday said that “victory has been snatched” from them, suggesting wrongdoings in the electoral process.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh further said that the party has not lost but has been deliberately made to lose.

“The most important thing right now is that the victory has been snatched from us, the system has been misused. The sentiments of the people and everyone felt that the ground reality was in favour of change but the result that has come today does not reflect that,” said Ramesh in Hindi at a press conference.

Ramesh further said that the writing on the wall was clear but said “there are people who experts replacing walls”.

“They just replace the walls. In this case, machines,” said Ramesh.

While exit polls had predicted Congress’ victory in Haryana, the results show that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won a third straight term in the state.

Of the 90 seats, the BJP has won 48 and Congress 37, according to the latest tally carried by CNN-News 18.

Ramesh said that the first priority is to make the case before the Election Commission (EC) and the party would approach the EC in a day or two.

“As far as the Haryana results are concerned, our first priority is to collate and consolidate all the complaints that have come from candidates from the three districts today. There will be other complaints and we hope to submit this to the Election Commission tomorrow evening or the day after. That is our immediate priority,” said Ramesh.

As for the election analyses, what went wrong with the campaign and what should have been done will definitely be discussed, but the first priority is to approach the Election Commission with all the complaints regarding the counting of votes, said Ramesh.

Even though Ramesh has blamed the election results on the alleged wrongdoing, senior party leader Kumari Sailja has urged the party high command to “identify those who negated efforts to bring party to power after 10 years”.

“High command should work out plan to help revive party in Haryana, identify those responsible for such results. It will not be business as usual. Congress should identify those who negated efforts to bring party to power after 10 years,” said Sailja, as per PTI
