The doors of Kedarnath Dham opened on Friday morning, marking the beginning of the Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand. On the auspicious festival of Akshaya Tritiya, the Chardham Yatra began.

In the Uttarakhand district of Rudraprayag stands Kedarnath, the sacred site of Lord Shiva. Lakhs of people visit this location annually to have darshan. One of Lord Shiva’s twelve Jyotirlingas and Panch Kedar is Kedarnath. The Shivalinga housed in the Kedarnath temple is an independent being. As a result, the temple gains more significance.

The temple is among the earliest Hindu temples still standing, having been built sometime about 1000 A.D.

The Kedarnath Temple was constructed by the Pandavas, the fabled heroes of the Indian epic Mahabharata, according to Hindu mythology.

Along with Yamunotri, Gangotri, and Badrinath, Kedarnath is a stop on the Chota Char Dham Yatra. Significantly spiritually, the temple is regarded as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, or divine embodiments of Lord Shiva. It is regarded as the most sacred of the 12 Jyotirlingas and is treasured especially by followers.
