In Bihar’s Araria district, a portion of a newly constructed bridge over the Bakra river collapsed within seconds on Tuesday.

Built at Rs 12 crore, the bridge aimed at easing the commute between Kursa Kanta and Sikti in Araria district, but it collapsed before its inauguration.

The bridge was constructed recently by the Bihar government, but was not opened yet as approach roads to it were not constructed.

No casualty or injuries have been reported in the incident, police confirmed.

The video of the Bihar bridge collapse soon went viral on social media. The clips show the bridge tilted to one side and its collapsed part being washed away within seconds. People who congregated there to capture the incident on their mobile phones were seen running toward safety.

Another viral footage shows a few people standing dangerously close to the edge of the remaining portion of the bridge. While, many were also seen standing under it.

Why the bridge in Bihar’s Araria collapse?

“A portion of a newly constructed bridge over Bakra river has collapsed. Officials have reached there to examine the matter,” PTI quoted Superintendent of Police (SP), Araria, Amit Ranjan as saying.

The cause of the collapse is not yet known, Ranjan added.

According to a report by NDTV, a major part of the collapsed portion of the bridge was built over the river. The section built on the banks of the Bakra River remains intact.

Leader blames construction company owner

Sikti MLA Vijay Kumar blamed the construction company’s owner for the bridge collapse.

“The bridge has collapsed due to negligence by the construction company’s owner. We demand that the administration should conduct an investigation,” Vijay Kumar was quoted as saying by ANI.
