Delhi NCR shivered as the mercury dropped to 5 degrees Celsius this morning. Other than low temperatures, visibility was poor due to dense fog affecting road, rail, and air traffic.

Last night, the temperature dropped to 5.8 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal; on Wednesday, it was 7.1 degrees. The daytime temperature reached 18.1 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal. According to the IMD, the daytime temperature will rise over the next few days.

Scientist Kuldeep Srivastava of the India Meteorological Department predicts that Delhi residents will experience a break from the cold wave conditions in the upcoming days as temperatures rise. He clarified that there won’t be any rain in the nation’s capital.

Railways reported that weather-related conditions in Delhi and various states caused delays of one to six hours for twenty-three trains that were headed for Delhi.

Indira Gandhi International Airport reported zero visibility due to “extremely dense fog conditions,” according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). On the other hand, the unfavorable weather had little effect on flying operations.

Authorities said,”Low Visibility Procedures are in progress at Delhi Airport. All flight operations are presently normal. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.”

When extremely dense fog results in poor or nonexistent visibility, aircraft must perform takeoffs and landings using the CAT III, or Category III, instrument landing system (ILS), which enables low visibility conditions.

On Thursday, the sun broke through the thinning layer of fog, providing some relief to the Delhi-NCR; however, the temperatures remained low due to the cool winds.
