Champai Soren has been appointed as the new chief minister of Jharkhand after former CM Hemant Soren handed in his resignation on Wednesday (Jan 31), confirmed Jharkhand Minister Banna Gupta. Banna Gupta says, “We have chosen Champai Soren as the leader of the Legislative Party. We came to the Raj Bhawan to request the Governor for the oath ceremony.”

Champai Soren is a member of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly and a member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Before becoming the CM, Champai Soren held the post of Cabinet Minister of Trasport, Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste and Backward class welfare in the cabinet of Hemant Soren.

Champai Soren is a resident of the Jilingoda village of Saraikela-Kharsawa district. His father was a poor farmer. Champai studied in a government school of Champai till Class 10. He was married while still in school and Soren is the father to four sons and three daughters. Champai Soren is also known as ‘Jharkhand Tiger’.

Meanwhile, former CM of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren has been held by ED in custody. The Enforcement Directorate is questioning him in connection with a land scam case. Hemant Soren reached the Raj Bhawan in the late evening. Earlier today, section 144 CrPc was imposed in a 100-meter radius of Raj Bhawan, CM house and ED office in Ranchi.
