The wholesale inflation rose for the second month straight to 1.26% in April, driven primarily by the rise in food prices.

The prices of fuel and power were also the primary drivers of the wholesale inflation, according to government data.

In March, the wholesale inflation was 0.53 against April’s 1.26%. In April last year, the figure was 0.79%.

“Positive rate of inflation in April 2024 is primarily due to increase in prices of food articles, electricity, crude petroleum and natural gas, manufacture of food products, other manufacturing etc,” said Ministry of Commerce & Industry said in a statement on Tuesday.

The inflation of food prices rose to 7.74% in April as against 6.88% in March. Of these, inflation in vegetables was was 23.60% in April as compared to 19.52% in March.

The inflation for fuel and power was at 1.38% in April, which up from 0.77% from the previous month.

While the wholesale inflation increased in April, retail inflation further eased in April to fall to an 11-month low of 4.84%. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) mainly takes into account retail inflation while working out the monetary policy for the country.
