Hours after Suresh Gopi, BJP’s first-ever MP from Kerala, took oath as a Union Minister of State (MoS) in the third Narendra Modi-led government on June 9, reports of him wanting to step down from the ministerial post started making buzz on social media.

The actor-politician, however, clarified on Monday confirming that he is “not going to resign” and is “committed to the development and prosperity of Kerala.”

‘Grossly incorrect’

Suresh Gopi denied reports on a few media platforms “spreading incorrect news” of him going to resign from the Council of Ministers of the Modi Government.

“This is grossly incorrect. Under the leadership of PM Modi, we are committed to the development and prosperity of Kerala,” Suresh Gopi, who won the Thrissur seat in the recently concluded 2024 Lok Sabha elections, said in a post on X.

How Suresh Gopi ‘quitting’ rumours began?

Earlier on Monday, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, posted a video on X where Suresh Gopi allegedly said, “Nothing was demanded. I had told (them) that I don’t want this. I feel that I will be relieved without delay.”

He was responding to reporters who asked whether he chose the post of MoS considering his film commitments.

Asked if it could be a problem for the people of Thrissur who voted for him, Suresh Gopi replied: “There is no problem for them. They know very well. As an MP for the people of Thrissur, I will perform very well. I desperately want to do films.”

A report by Hindustan Times also quoted a BJP leader earlier saying that Suresh Gopi was “unhappy over his induction as the MoS and had hoped to be appointed a cabinet minister or at least, minister of state (independent charge).”

However, on Sunday Suresh Gopi had said he was not “expecting to be in the ministry.” He even had said that he did not know what role he would be given in the Cabinet, adding that,

“I am obeying my Prime Minister and my Home Minister – my national leaders.”

On June 6, Suresh Gopi had said he does not want to be a minister and all he wanted was that the ministries implement the projects he proposed for the welfare of the people of his state, Kerala.

Suresh Gopi’s win was historic for BJP

The 65-year-old leading Malayalam film actor’s win from the Thrissur constituency proved historic for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as he opened the account for the party in Kerala for the first time since independence after defeating CPI’s V S Sunilkumar by a margin of 74,686 votes.

In 2019, he had contested the general election with a BJP ticket but finished third, behind Congress and CPI. The actor-politician was then elected as a Member of Rajya Sabha by the BJP.
