In Pune, a 17-year-old boy, ran over a bike killing two people while driving a Porsche Taycan without a registration number. He was reportedly under the influence of alcohol. The boy was granted bail just 15 hours after being arrested.

What’s the case?

The minor involved in the case, a son of a prominent real estate developer, was returning from a pub in the wee hours of Sunday after celebrating clearing Class 12 exams. He was driving the Porsche at over 200 kms per hour and the vehicle had no number plate.

The speeding Porsche hit a two-wheeler in Pune’s Kalyaninagar junction, killing Anis Awadhiya (24) and Ashwini Costa (24), both engineers from Madhya Pradesh who were working in the city.

After hitting the duo, the four-wheeler hit another car before dashing off the roadside pavement railings.

The deceased were reportedly returning from a party at a restaurant in the vicinity of where the accident was reported.

According to an eyewitness, after being hit by the vehicle, Ashwini was thrown about 20 feet in the air and landed hard, while Aneesh was thrown at a parked car and suffered serious injuries. Both died on the spot.

A report by NDTV quoted an eyewitness, an auto-rickshaw driver waiting for a ride, saying that the accident occurred around 2:15 AM on Sunday.

“The car was going at full speed. The driver tried to flee after the car hit the bike, but the airbags deployed. He could not see the road and therefore stopped the car,” he said

Locals caught the driver and two other occupants in the car. One of them managed to escape. The people congregating there beat up the two they had caught, the auto-rickshaw operator further said.

What happened next?

The minor driver was arrested and a case under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against him.

The cops have also booked the father of the Porsche driver and a case has been filed against the pub for serving alcohol to the minor.

The 17-year-old boy was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) on Sunday evening. The police argued that the driver be tried as an adult.

The court, however, did not accept the plea and instead granted him bail on certain conditions.

Conditions set by JJB for releasing the minor who killed two

As a punishment for killing the two, the minor has been granted bail under the condition of just working with Yerawada traffic police for 15 days and writing a 300-word essay on – “effect of road accidents and their solution”.

The JJB also has ordered that the boy be sent for treatment by a doctor who will help him quit drinking and seek psychiatric counselling. The report of the counselling must be submitted to the court.

Furthermore, the JJB also ordered the minor to study traffic rules and give a presentation on the same to the Board. In addition, the minor has to vow that he will assist accident victims in the future, should he ever witness one.

“The honourable Court was kind enough to grant my client bail on certain conditions. We have complete faith in the investigation and shall continue to cooperate with the police agencies. My client is duty-bound to follow the stringent conditions of the Honourable Court. We shall continue to attend the proceedings and wait for the outcome of the investigation,” advocate Prashant Patil, representing the minor, said.
