The central government on Saturday appointed Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh as the next Chief of the Air Staff. Air Marshal Singh will take over after the current chief of air staff Vivek Ram Chaudhari completes his tenure on September 30.
Who is he?
During his vast career spanning 40 years, Air Marshal Singh has commanded an operational fighter squadron and a frontline air base.
He was also commissioned into the fighter pilot stream of the Indian Air Force in December 1984.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College, and National Defence College, this Air Officer is a Qualified Flying Instructor and Experimental Test Pilot, boasting over 5,000 flight hours on a diverse range of fixed and rotary wing aircraft.
As a test pilot, he headed the MiG-29 Upgrade Project Management Team in Moscow, Russia. He also served as the Project Director (Flight Test) at the National Flight Test Centre, where he was responsible for the flight testing of the Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas.
His notable staff positions include Air Defence Commander at the South Western Air Command and Senior Air Staff Officer at the Eastern Air Command. Before taking on the role of Vice Chief of the Air Staff, he was the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Air Command.
