Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took a swipe at the Opposition, saying that he appreciates their resolve to remain in that position for decades adding that many opposition parties have lost courage to fight the upcoming elections.

Speaking at the Lok Sabha, Modi said, “I appreciate the Opposition’s resolve to remain in the opposition for a long time…The way you sat here (in govt) for many decades, the same way you resolve to sit there (in opposition). The public will certainly give you its blessings.”

His comments came ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha elections that are set to be held this year. Modi said that many leaders are swiftly changing their seats and are vying for a seat in Rajya Sabha instead of Lok Sabha.

Modi expressed his disappointment at the Opposition for not fulfilling their responsibility of holding the position. “Congress had the opportunity to become a good Opposition. However, they were futile in fulfilling that responsibility even in 10 years.”

He accused the Congress of using rhetoric every year to try and win the elections. “Ek hi product baar-baar launch karne ke chakkar mein, Congress ki dukaan tala lagne ki naubat aa gayi hai (Launching the same product again and again has led Congress to close shop forever.)”

PM Modi said that the Congress is stuck in dynastic ideology and does not give opportunity to the younger generation to participate in their affairs.

Notably, this is PM Modi’s last speech in the Parliament before the Lok Sabha elections.

Guaranteeing that India’s economy will grow further in BJP’s third term, Modi said, “When we say that we’ll become the third-largest economy, the Opposition says it will happen on its own, nothing big. I want to tell the youth how it is done and what is the government’s role in this.”

Modi was responding to the President’s Motion of Thanks on President Droupadi Murmu’s speech in the Parliament last week.
