A 51-year-old man died in West Bengal’s Kolkata after the severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ made landfall between the coasts of the state and Bangladesh in the late hours of Sunday (May 26).

According to reports, the man died after a wall collapsed and chunks of concrete fell on him during the peak of the storm.

Cyclone ‘Remal’ updates

After making landfall on Sunday evening around 8:30 pm and causing trail destruction including damaging of houses, blowing away roofs of thatched huts, uprooting trees, waterlogging in most parts of Kolkata, the cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ began moving northwards. Millions of people have been left without electricity after electric poles toppled during the storm.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD) it is expected to weaken later on Monday (May 27).

The cyclone had wind speeds of 110-120 kilometers per hour, with gusts up to 135 kilometers per hour.

Over 100,000 people were evacuated from vulnerable areas in West Bengal prior to the cyclone’s impact.

Cyclone disrupts normalcy

Air, rail, and road transportation in Kolkata and southern Bengal were disrupted largely due to cyclone Remal.

Several trains were cancelled by the Eastern and South Eastern Railways, while Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport suspended flight operations for 21 hours, affecting 394 flights.

Rain continues to lash Kolkata

Meanwhile, heavy rains and gusty winds continued to lash most parts of Kolkata on Monday morning.

Fallen trees removed by Bengal Governor’s Special Task Force.

On Monday morning, Bengal Governor Dr CV Ananda Bose led the Rapid Action Force of Raj Bhavan to the areas affected by Remal. The fallen trees were removed by the Governor’s Special Task Force of Raj Bhavan.

Exams on Monday postponed

Exams and events scheduled for Monday (May 27) have been postponed. A notice was issued by Presidency University registrar Debajyoti Konar saying undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) 2nd-sem exams were deferred to June 18.

St Xavier’s College rescheduled the 2nd and 4th semester examinations to May 30 and June 3. Jadavpur University (JU) and Calcutta University (CU) also rescheduled exams and mentioned that the new dates will be announced soon.
