BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the next chief minister of Maharashtra on Thursday. Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar were also sworn in as the deputy chief ministers of the state in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The ceremony follows weeks of deadlock after the Mahayuti alliance witnessed a power tussle between Shinde and
Fadnavis for the chief minister’s chair. The latter was unanimously elected as the next chief minister of Maharashtra and hours later Shinde also accepted the post of Dy CM.
Fadnavis has become the chief minister of Maharashtra for the third time.
The swearing-in ceremony was a star-studded event with celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Sachin Tendulkar in attendance. BJP’s top brass including Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman and Rajnath Singh were also present at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan to attend the event.
More than 4,000 police personnel have been deployed for security during the swearing-in ceremony of Maharashtra’s new chief minister scheduled on Thursday evening.
Mahayuti won a historic victory with BJP alone securing 122 out of the 288 assembly seats while Shiv Sena and NCP secured 57 and 41 seats respectively.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet swearing-in function will be held between December 7 and 9, sources told News18.
The Mahayuti alliance is yet to allot portfolios although BJP wants to keep the Home and Urban Ministry for itself.
Asked when other ministers would take an oath of office, BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar told reporters, “It is most likely that the council of ministers will be sworn in before the winter session of the assembly starts, so as to avoid administrative disruption.” The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Azad Maidan ground in south Mumbai. Governor C P Radhakrishnan will administer the oath of office to Fadnavis and his deputies.
