Amid a spate of terrorist attacks in Jammu, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday held a high-level meeting to review the security situation in the region.
The meeting was attended by Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, DG BSF, DG CRPF, DGP J&K, Heads of Intelligence Agencies and other senior officials of the army, CAPFs as well as the J&K Police.
In the past couple of months, the region has seen an increase in terrorist attacks that have claimed the lives of several civilians and officials alike. Nine army personnel, including a captain, were killed in two separate terror attacks in remote forest belts of Machedi in Kathua and Desa forest in Doda on July 8 and July 15.
The attacks come at a time when Jammu and Kashmir is gearing up for its first assembly elections since the revocation of Article 370.
What was discussed in the meeting?
“We must launch meticulous and well-planned counter-terrorism operations with greater synergy between all the agencies to wipe out terrorists and those aiding and abetting them,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
He asked the Army, CAPFs and the Jammu Kashmir Police to actively conduct counter-terrorism operations in the Jammu Division.
The LG also said that measures must be taken to further strengthen the security grid to ensure zero cross-border infiltration.
500 para commandos to hunt down terrorists
Since the terrorist attacks, security officials in Jammu have been having a difficult time tracking down infiltrators due to multiple logistical reasons.
The Indian Army, therefore, has deployed around 500 Para Special Forces commandos in the area to hunt down the 50-55 terrorists from Pakistan who have entered the region to revive terrorism there, defence sources told news agency ANI.
The intelligence agencies have also bolstered their apparatus in the area and are working to take out the terrorist support infrastructure there including overground workers who support terrorists.
The Army has already brought in troops to the area including one brigade strength of around 3,500-4000 personnel to counter Pakistan’s proxy aggression here, they said.
