Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that his party is going to do a historic work for the unemployed youth with its new scheme ‘Pehali Naukari Pakki’ if voted to power in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing a public meeting in Karnataka’s Mandya, Gandhi said, “I am here to tell the unemployed youth of Karnataka, Congress party is going to do a historic work for you, the name of the scheme is ‘Pehli Naukari Pakki’. It means, that the youth who are unemployed, Congress is going to give them the right to the first job.”

“If you are a diploma holder or graduate from college, Congress party is going to give you a right (right to the first job)…,” he added.

This is Gandhi’s first visit to the Congress-governed Karnataka after the election schedule was announced a month ago.

In its manifesto, Congress has guaranteed a new Right to Apprenticeship Act to provide a one year apprenticeship with a private or a public sector company to every diploma holder orcollege graduate below the age of 25.

“Apprentices will get Rs lakh a year. The apprenticeship will impart skills, enhance employability and provide full-time job opportunities for millions of youth,” the Congress said.

The Congress has also promised to fill nearly 30 lakh vacancies in sanctionedposts at various levels in the central government.

“We will stipulate that vacancies in the panchayats and municipal bodies shall be filled according to a timetable agreed with state governments,” it said in the manifesto.

In Mandya, the Congress is facing JD(S) which is BJP’s alliance partner. There is a direct contest between JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy and Congress’ Venkataramane Gowda, popularly known as ‘Star Chandru’.

The Congress had secured only one seat in the 2019 general elections in Karnataka, which has a total of 28 constituencies. BJP had bagged 25 while an independent candidate backed by the party had also emerged victorious. JD(S), which fought the elections in alliance with the Congress back then, won in one seat.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said the party will win 15 to 20 seats in the state this time around. Mandya will vote in the first of the two phase elections in Karnataka.

While 14 constituencies in the southern part of the state are going for election on April 26, the second phase voting for the northern districts will be held on May 7.
