Kangana Ranaut, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate for Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi Lok Sabha constituency, took a swipe at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee using a post of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s deepfake video, urging her to ‘ take a chill pill.

What has happened?

An AI spoof video of Mamata Banerjee went viral on Monday. Moments after this, the Cyber Crime division of Kolkata Police sent a notice two social media users for posting a clip which was “offensive, malicious, and inciting”.

The police warned the users – ‘SoldierSaffron7’ and ‘Shalendervoice’ for sharing the deepfake video of the West Bengal CM where she was dancing on a stage and directed them to “immediately disclose” their identity including name and residence and warned of legal action if information sought wasn’t revealed.

Hours later a similar deepfake video of PM Modi started doing rounds on social media. The clip was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a user called ‘Atheist_Krishna’ who also wrote, “Posting this video because I know that ‘The DICTATOR’ is not going to get me arrested for this.”

Mamata Banerjee took the legal route, but PM Modi’s reaction was completely different. He instead expressed delight over the spoof clip.

“Like all of you, I also enjoyed seeing myself dance. Such creativity in peak poll season is truly a delight! #PollHumour,” PM Modi reacted to the video.

Kangana Ranaut message for ‘uptight’ Mamata Banerjee

Sharing the post of PM Modi’s reaction to his deepfake video, actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut “schooled” Mamata Banerjee.

“Mamata didi ji this is called taking a chill pill, aap bhi kabhi le liya karo, hamesha gusse mei rehti ho, bachcho ne aapka dancing meme kya bana diya, aap toh unko jail mei daalne lagi (you should also take a chill pill sometime. You are always in angry mood. You were to jail children who just made a dancing meme on you.)”

“How uncool of you!! Sorry to say but you are too uptight, rigid and uncool,” Ranaut said.

The actor is contesting her first election in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. She has currently been busy with her election campaign and has also been taking pot-shot at opposition leaders.

Voting in Himachal Pradesh is scheduled in the last phase of Lok Sabha polls 2024 on June 1.

In a recent interview, Kangana said she is not going to leave the film industry “right now” as she has “many films pending.”
