Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the INDIA bloc will choose five different leaders over the next five years to lead the country.
PM Modi’s comments came during a rally in Haryana. The state, which has 10 constituencies, will go to polls on May 25 during the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
“The condition of the INDI alliance is such that they are already fighting for position. They are now saying that every year, one person will serve as the PM of the country. Five years, five PMs. You tell me, will the country run like this?” the prime minister asked.
In this election, “you will not only choose the country’s PM but also decide the country’s future”, the prime minister told the gathering.
“On one hand is your tried and tested ‘sewak’ Modi. Who is on the other side, one does not know,” he added.
With just a few days left before the Lok Sabha election results are announced on June 4, the INDIA bloc has still not narrowed down on a prime ministerial candidate.
The Opposition bloc has come under fire several times for not choosing a candidate for the top post.
Meanwhile, different leaders from the alliance have conveyed their version of the matter.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal says he has no interest in becoming the prime minister if the alliance wins. Talking to PTI, the AAP leader said, “This is an election to save the democracy. We have to save the country from ’taanashai’ (dictatorship). They (BJP) will end democracy if they come to power again, there will be no elections.
“Even if it happens, it will be like Russia. (Vladimir) Putin put the opposition in jail or got them killed, and then conducted polls. In Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina put all opposition figures in jail. In Pakistan, they put Imran Khan in jail. The same will happen here,” he added.
Shiv Sena UBT leader and Maharashtra’s former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, earlier this month, said that the bloc has chosen its prime ministerial face but does not intend to make it public yet.
